Homelessness
has always been a difficult concept to understand and it doesn't seem
to be getting any easier. DreamTree has come up with a way to
educate and inform our community while raising funds for much needed
youth services in the Taos community. We hope you will join
us this year.
Our
goal is to continue to provide services for youth, both in our current
long term transitional living program, for youth ages 16 - 24, and
also to open an emergency shelter for youth in crisis, ages 13 - 17.
Many
see Taos as a small town with gorgeous vistas and light that has inspired
artists for over a century. And this is true. But, as in any
community, there are a number of youth who are homeless because they
have aged out of foster care, don't have the skills to live independently,
have been recently released from juvenile detention facilities or
come from unsafe and abusive home environments. DreamTree's
transitional living program is a place for these youth- A safe
place for them to live for up to two years, while they heal from past
traumas and learn the skills they need to go on to a future of independent
living.
Currently,
there is no emergency youth shelter in the region. In addition
to suicide prevention, the Tree House shelter will provide shelter
for up to 14 days, individual, group and family therapy, referrals
to other services and assistance with health concerns.
